Restoran Ah Piaw

Supper in JB? Try delicious chilli wanton noodles! Oh Yesterday, we drove in to JB to deliver 3 pillows to Ma. Ah I shall share a little about those pillows soon. Anyway we decided to grab high-tea, dinner, supper and pump petrol before heading back SG. Hehe.

I’ve heard alot about Ah Piaw from hungry young JBreans who are still awake after 12.30am. Yes it opens at 12.30am only. Any earlier, you have to settle for the so-so only abalone noodles from Ah Piaw’s neighbour, Fifty Nine Restaurant.

The noodles are being served relatively dry and dressed with lots of special chilli sauce! Slices of char siu and kailan/Chinese kale was added to the dish. The thin noodles were exactly how baby likes it. Perfectly Al dente!

The noodles had a good bite to it because it was firm enough. You see, my partner here is very fussy when it comes to noodles. For him, noodles have to be cooked so as to be firm but not hard. If the noodles stick to his teeth when it is being chewed, it is considered undercooked. Need to also avoid overcooking them else it will be too gooey. That’s why I don’t handle noodles whenever we attempt to whip up supper. He does.

Loving soups of every kind, I enjoyed the steaming hot soup with minced pork wontons more than the noodles. Well, it helped that the soup was garnished with spring onions which gave the piping hot soup a unique bouquet.

Not sure about you but I’ve always fancy wantons boiled in the soup rather than those deep fried in oil. I liked how the smooth velvety feel of the wanton slips through my throat.

No wonder the wantons were so tasty. It’s made fresh!

At first I thought that RM5 for a plate of wanton is a tad expensive, but the pricey tag was justified by the reasonable serving. We got 7-8 pieces of wanton and more noodles as compared to the normal RM3 wanton noodles we find elsewhere. Then again, it’s kinda sucky that they don’t cater to light eaters who are contented with the average RM3 serving. I had no plans to eat so much for supper leh. Ended up have to dump some noodles to my dearest rubbish bin again. Sorry baby. By the way, here’re the pricing for 3 different sizes of Ah Piaw wanton noodles.

Small RM5
Medium RM5.50
Large RM6

If you are driving, you can park along Jalan Kelewang 2 (right next to my church, the Sacred Heart Cathedral) and take a 2 minutes walk over to Ah Piaw. Or you can park opposite Ah Piaw which is just in front of Wisma Tiong Hua. Pretty safe as the area is bright and there’s security guards at Wisma Tiong Hua but don’t be an easy target. As how I would advice all my friends, keep all your valuables in the boot and just bring enough cash in your pockets for supper.

Restoran Kimdo

If you are looking for a zesty bbq snack to munch on, go grab a few sticks of the special satay from Restoran Kimdo. It’s a Chinese Restaurant opposite The Store Shopping Center at Taman Sentosa JB. Look out for a giant red crab sitting at the top right corner of the signboard. It’s a huge 3D crab! You can’t miss it.

kimdo satay combo

Warning: never never try this bbq delight if you can’t take spicy food. These dynamite sticks will blow you up for sure.

Last week, Evelyn was in town with her bf so we decided to grab some of these special satays! and chill. We ordered a good mix of prawns satay, chicken satay and also sotong satay.

I liked the prawns best! It tasted so damn good that we ate the shells too! Ah yes the satays come with a plate of sliced cucumbers and mangoes to refresh our tastebuds after each fiery chunk of meat.

kimdo prawn satay

Seriously. The prawns were bbq-ed till perfection, distinctively smokey and crispy enough for us to crunch on. Really addictive. I believe we could easily chow down 10 sticks of smoked prawns in a jiffy.

The chicken and sotong was well-marinated because the satay had so much flavour and bite! We went ga-ga over the charred bits on the satay. Oh another reason why this special satay is so good – unlike those normal satays which we dip into a peanut sauce, Kimdo’s satay didn’t tasted oily and there wasn’t any chunks of disgusting fat cubes!

According to hub, we spent RM19 for 10 chicken, 5 prawns and 4 sotong satays. Actually, they mixed up the orders because we wanted more prawns than chicken. Thus, if you are thinking of patronising this restaurant, make sure you double confirm the orders when you’re there and feel free to rush them if you think they are taking too long to serve the food.

We could not get enough of the tantalising ultra-spicy dip made from green cilipadi. Enough said. I’m getting hungry.

:/

Will be back for more dynamite sticks and dip.

New Lucky Seafood Restaurant

We came here for bro’s birthday! OK I’m going to insert 2 exterior shots of the restaurant from limsimi. I forgot to take pics of the restaurant because I was too excited about the food. oops. lol.

Well, it’s pretty easy to locate the restaurant. It’s very close to the Tebrau Market and Crystal Crown Hotel.

Here’s how Tebrau Market looks like.

:)

Now, the foooood!

Ok Since it’s a birthday celebration, the Longevity Noodles (long life noodles, or ???, “Chang Shou Mian”) is a must! It’s part of the Chinese culture. Chinese being Chinese, food in particular is super rich in symbolism. Well these long noodles represent a long unbroken life. We are not supposed to cut it (unless we bite it in our mouth?) because this will incur bad luck/shortening our life. That’s what they (ancient/modern conservative Chinese) say la. We know it’s not true!! LOL. The dish is just meant for celebrating life.

Beautiful isn’t’ it? That’s quite a huge serving but it’s just right for 10 pax. The noodles are really thin and long. There’s lotsa bean sprouts, Chinese mushrooms, lean pork, veg and fried boiled quail eggs! Mm the bean sprouts were really crunchy.

Sweet & Sour Steamed Fish/Thai Steamed Fish

The fish was very delicate, very fleshy and the sauce was ok. It could be spicier by my standard (I loveee spicey food).

Well fish is an essential dish at the dinner table during celebrations because in Chinese culture, fish is a sign of prosperity. Also, the chinese word for fish,? ‘yu’ sounds similar to the Chinese words for abundance. Thus, eating fish will help fulfill our/my bro’s wishes in the year.

Stir-fry Five-flower Pork (Wu Hua Rou, ???)

Five-flower pork = belly pork with a beautiful cut, four or five layers of alternating lean and fat meat. MMMmm The Five-flower pork was chopped into bite size and it tasted absolutely heavenly when stir-fried with dried chillies and freshly chopped onions. I loveeee the wobbly skin layer.

You know, the thick flavorsome gravy goes really well with fragrant white rice. Since this pork dish was cooked using a claypot, it is highly aromatic and pleasing. The claypot cooking method helps to retain the juices and flavor because the goody juices released by the food as it cooks cannot escape from the pot!! Trapped!

Cuttlefish with stir fry lean pork, celery and lotus

My sis favorite dish. She is very passionate when it comes to eating cuttlefish. Lol. It’s a very complementary combination of mid-size cuttlefish flakes, lotus, celery and lean pork. The strong fishy taste was cleverly offset by the fresh, tarty flavour of the lotus and celery.

Roasted Chicken

Though I’m not a big fan of chicken, I took a few more pieces than my usual helpings because the meat was strangely moist/mildly briny and not as dry/tasteless as chicken normally is. Not bad.

Do take note: you need to pre-order the roasted chicken a day before!

OK The bill was around RM200++ for 10 pax and my fav for this dinner would be the Five Flower Pork!

Ah besides the dishes above, you can try the cod-fish, prawns etc. In fact, just order whatever you feel like eating la. Everything they served here is definitely pleasing to your taste buds and value-for-money. Honestly, the quality of its food had been consistently good for a restaurant that has been around more than 20 years.

You can call them a day in advance if you wish to book a private room! A private room is suitable for mini gatherings/birthday dinners etc. There’s no booking charges/extra charges for reserving a private room but you need to accept the 2 bowls of peanuts which cost RM6 each. Well I would suggest getting a private dining room if you have about 10 people dining (including you).

Food pictures were taken with dad’s Nokia E66.

Restoran Mei Sin

October 1st, 2009 View Comments

I’m waiting for my one and only kindy friend to bring me here for a bowl of steaming hot Mee Hoon Kueh! (Eh you said on twitter leh. Don’t care. Must bring me.) Yeah I still keep in touch with my kindergarten mate! hehe. He’s a very dear fellow! I used to steal glances at this boy who loves to cry all the time, wondering why he is so fair. Can’t remember if I tried comforting him to get used to kindergarten life. I guess not. I was too busy making sandcastles.

:D

Show you our kindergarten. It’s super retro!

Tada! Hilltop Private School Kindergarten. Established since 1940.

Fond memories! 1986 babies had fun stealing carrots from our mom’s grocery bags and bring these orange goodies to kindy school. Why? Rabbits!! Yes our kindy school has lotsa fluffy rabbits for us to play with. Kindy friend, lets go back to visit one day!

OK OK I shall continue with this Mee Hoon Kueh place.

Now I’m actually not quite sure if this is the Mee Hoon Kueh shop in his mind or he may be referring to the other one near Leisure Mall?

Nevermind lah. I’ll just do a post on the other shop when he brings me there. As for Restoran Mei Sin, pa brought me there for lunch that day. I figure I’ll do a write-up on this shop since it has been around for quite a while. Ma used to drive me here after school during my secondary school days to ta-pau/takeaway!

Ah here’s the Mee Hoon Kueh (???)! Mee Hoon Kueh is also known as rice cake soup. There’s minced pork, meat balls, ikan bilis, a type of leafy veg (mani choy) and black fungus. Btw this handmade noodle is prepared fresh! I saw them pinching the dough and placing them in the soup pot. They also serve Ban Mian (??), another type of handmade noodles. It’s longer and flatter. Well, I prefer the fatter and squarer bits of Mee Hoon Kueh. You can opt for the either the dry or soupy version here.

If I”m not wrong, it’s only RM4/bowl. Oh Jalan Abiad should be too hard to find. As I mentioned, it’s near Leisure Mall.

This restoran (restaurant in malay) opens till quite late at night. So you can come here for lunch/tea/dinner/supper when you’re craving for soupy stuff! Come to think of it, I always have cravings for soupy stuff. Random: ma always craves for steamed chicken. lol.

They also serve nasi lemak, not too bad but I always get the soupy noodles when I’m here. Oh there’s also toast bread with kaya and butter + half-boiled eggs in the mornings.

:)

Kindy friend oh Kindy friend! When?
