La Gourmet

December 18th, 2009 § 2

After lunch at Ah Soon Bak Kut Teh, I brought JB pig-outers here for mid-afternoon dessert/yumcha. We need a place to chill and rest our tummies. I like the dim and warm  lightings that offer the vibe of a great chill out place for urbanites looking for a place to enjoy cold dessert with friends! Not to mention, there’s plenty of parking lots for everyone!

I guess Mar was feeling pretty happy after a good lunch. It totally showed on her smiley face. Speaking about parking lots. We came to a conclusion that Malaysian loves to park head-in while Singaporeans ace in parking butt-in. What you think? True?

Anyway I love this place because I love mango and I love sago. Well I’ll only have green bean soup if there’s sago inside and do you know that sago tastes exceptionally good in bubur cha cha and dessert pastries. But the ultimate sago partner is the slushy-cushy MANGO LOO! That’s how we call this mango dessert in JB which may originate from Hong Kong. Oh I still dream of the heavenly mango dessert I had at Xu Liu Shan, Hong Kong! *drools* Anyway, finally, a decent dessert place in JB where I can head for when the occasional mango sago cravings hits me.

Theses are the mango delights JB pig-outers had that afternoon. Mar and I decided to share a dessert to save space for whatever food that’s coming next.

Out of 4 orders, 3 were mango mango mango! Kelvin was the odd one out with watermelon ice. He wanted something more refreshing. So watermelon works better for him.

Can you see the sago sticking on the ice? Hard to tell eh? Can’t remember how much we spent here but it shouldn’t be more than RM30. The price of the desserts ranges between RM5-8.

Overall, La Gourmet is not bad but it can never beat the mango goodies at Xu Liu Shan. I so wanna go Hong Kong again!! Cablenazi, heard that?

Albert Centre Temporary Market

November 22nd, 2009 § 3

Baby had cravings for thin yellow egg noodles in spicy curry soup when we were around Bugis area last weekend. Thus, we dropped by Albert Centre Temporary Market to see if we can find any noodley goodies there.

Yes we did! Check out this stall.

This curry soup was just so addicting! We finished everything! The curry soup was thick yet smooth and we could taste the fragrant spices. There’s tau pok, sliced fishcakes and some kangkong veg but that’s not all. The best part has yet to come.

THE CHICKEN IS FREAKIN GOOD! The chicken is tender and soft. These big chucks of meat practically melts in my mouth.

When we were about to leave, the goreng pisang stall right opposite the curry mee stall caught our attention!

albert centre 14

Well the goreng pisang here is good! It’s crispy and the banana is sweet! Plus, these fried goodies do not smell as if the oil used to fry these items had been used repeatedly. It’s quite hard to find the perfect golden brown goreng pisang in Singapore. Most of the time, those I’ve tried in Singapore’s ‘pasar malam’ is too dry and the banana is not sweet enough!

Mr.Song, the boss, strongly recommended the fried durian. OMG D24 durian goodness! The durian filling is so rich and creamy! The more we ate of it the less we felt inclined to stop. We enjoyed the crispy layer wrapped around the oozing durian paste. They must had whipped the egg white extra foamy to make the snack so crispy! No idea what’s secret ingredient they included in the batter.

Now I know where to get fried fritters to curb my goreng pisang cravings when I’m in Singapore.

Xu Liu Shan

October 20th, 2009 § 0

This is our favourite desert place in Hong Kong! Xu Liu Shan is a really popular Hong Kong brand for nearly two decades. There’s numerous branches all over Hong Kong, and most of them are conveniently located near the MTRs/ shopping malls.

MUST order MANGO dessert here! You can find many many mango desserts here! Theres mango fruits platter, mango puree with fresh mango cubes, mango puree with fresh mango cubes and pomelo sacs, mango puree with fresh mango cubes, sago with coconut milk, mango puree with fresh mango cubes and pomelo sacs topped with mango sherbert ice-cream, etc. Haha Xu Liu Shan is Mangoland!!

Xu Liu Shan’s mango sago dessert RAWKS! It’s so delicious and fruity. The abundant mango cubes were so fresh and the sago were tastily QQ. Also, I liked the perfectly smooth texture of the mango puree. I think this mango dessert was divine!

BTW Xu Liu Shan is also a herbal tea shop specializing in herbal jellies so you can also get some Gui Ling Gao, here. But we didn’t get that. We were feeling a little hungry so ordered carrot cake. Not bad although it does not contains mango.

Even the chilli sauce is superb! Yum yum.

The staff were really busy. Be prepared to queue and wait for a table! But it’s worth the wait. If not, take-away the dessert and eat it any parks nearby.

Pastries at Lyndhurst Terrace

October 16th, 2009 § 0

There’s a street in the Central area of Hong Kong.
Built on a slope in southern Central district.
Here’s where we got lost and chanced upon a hidden gem.
A Chinese shop that sells round bright yellow pastries!

We actually walked all the way up! Goodness. Not sure how we missed the elevator to go up to the Mid-Levels! Silly couple right? Lol. Anyway if you are planning to use the elevator instead, you’ll see an “exit” for Lyndhurst Terrace. Easy.

Once you exit for Lyndhurst Terrace, let your nose guide you to Tai Cheong Bakery. Well, just follow the lovely aroma of buttery pastries and you will be on the right  track.

Guess what. We ate too much chives and pork dumplings for dinner so had to keep the delicious egg tarts for breakfast.

Thus, we ate egg tarts for breakfast at Ocean Park. Hehe. And my vomit after the scary alien ride was yellowish. Wasted lor.

Anyway I can’t believe that the egg tarts still taste so nice although it’s 1 night old! lol. The crust is still kinda fluffy and the egg part is still bouncily tasty! boink boink. lol. ok how should I describe it… ah the tart is hard but not too hard, soft but not too soft! lol Amazing right. I think it’s not easy to find egg tarts with crust that are as perfect as Tai Cheong’s. And it didn’t event tasted stale after 1 night in an air-con room!

OK am making a mental note not to eat too much before I visit Tai Cheong the next time because I want to buy the egg tarts straight out of the oven and eating it on the  streets! I’m sure it will taste heavenly judging by how wonderful the 1 night old tart tasted.

Horlicks Malties

October 11th, 2009 § 2

Do you remember these tablets? Ah Horlicks Malties is a nostalgic candy for 1980s babies.

When I was little I played doctors and nurses with other kids. We pretended that these tablets were doctor prescribed medication.
:D

Who don’t love these small round malted sweets? It can cure scabs for kids who frequently fall off their bicycles and even cut off junk food cravings if you consume the tablets religiously. Hehe. That’s what our ‘doctor’ said back then.

Happy to still find it in stores. Got it at RM2 for 3 packets and there’s 9 round tablets in each packet. Eevon has 27 malted sweets to last her over the weekend.

Have a great weekend!
