OMG. I’ve never thought I would venture out in the middle of the night to spooky haunts. Never. Not since I watched Emily Rose. But last night, I went in the name of science. Hehe. So with Asia Paranormal Investigators (API), 24Seven and fellow bloggers, Eevon embarked on a spooky trail!!!
Thanks 24Seven for the invite!
We were all so excited to kick start the trail. We boarded the bus at around 9pm and were introduced to Charles Goh, founder of API and his team.
A couple of Grim Reapers joined us on this spooky trail. Hoho

First Stop: Village of the Dead
“Village of the Dead” is at the Bukit Brown Chinese Cemetery.
We followed the light sticks trail in groups of 4. It was about 45 minutes of trekking through an abandoned cemetery. We saw creepy crumbling tombstones and trudged our way through narrow pathways with overgrown grasses. The darkness enveloped us and I need to keep shining the torchlight on the ground to prevent myself from slipping or accidentally stepping on a tomb!
Halfway, we found ourselves near a small stream and we heard scrubbing noises. Apparently, 2 ‘ghosts’ were doing their laundry and one of them was scrubbing non-stop mechanically, My group hanged around too long and that scrubbing ‘ghost’ actually pointed her finger to prompt us to move on! She was tired of scrubbing! haha.

At the end of the trail was the highlight, a dilapidated shack built over Tan Boon Cheng’s tomb!

There is actually a reclusive person staying in that house! And that ‘someone’ who we did not get to see keeps all those dogs which were barking irritatingly all the time. CREEPY
Can you see Tan Boon Cheng’s tomb? Look closer. It’s behind the noisy dog!

Apparently a lot of Singapore’s leading/famous men are here. Tan Tock Seng’s son, Tan Kim Ching is buried here. Nearby, is the man Boon Lay MRT is named after. Mr. Chew Boon Lay!
Second Stop: Old Changi Hospital
If you have no idea, Old Changi Hospital is said to be the most haunted place Singapore having survived the gory of World War 2.
It was an uphill walk to the back of the hospital. The air was stagnant and no one knows why the street lamps were not working on this street which leads us to the hospital. CREEPY. On the way, we were introduced to the fenced-up haunted commando barracks that is supposedly an unutilized military store now. Why is it haunted? There’s a mural of Lucifer on the wall that couldn’t be painted over/washed away. It will reappear the next day! FREAKY!
After that short briefing, we continue walking towards the hospital. It’s around 12 minutes from where the bus dropped us. OMG when we reached, the old colonial building with graffiti gives me the feel of Youth Scape Park meets National Museum of Singapore.

We were asked to stay within a circle which was pretty good because a few of us were freaking out. Then, API members traced a large circle using flour and we were supposed to lookout for footprint marks on the flour. Charles placed a five pieces of sweet Tau Sar Piah on the ground to lure the spirits near the circle. We will know that they are ‘eating’ the pastries if the motion detectors placed in front of the pastries sounds.
Personally this part is funny because I kinda like Tau Sar Piah too. lol.
Anyway there are in fact, many of such electronic devices that are adapted to ghost hunting. Charles said that ghosts have paranormal energy and the energy that a ghost gives off can cause disruption in a location’s magnetic field! So we can detect their presence using electronic measuring devices.
Still can’t believe tried to lure spirits with Tau Sar Piah.

At another corner, Charles placed a flat torch on the ground which can be easily lighted with a slight touch. A motion detector is placed in front of the torch and it will alert us when a ghost decides to reveal its presence by lighting the torch.
By now, the atmosphere was quite eerie because the motion detector earlier was giving out fake alarms.

But that was still not paranormal enough! Another device was set up to record any ghost trying to speak to us! Electronic Voice Phenomenon explains static, stray radio transmissions and background noise! No one wanted to ‘talk’ to the spirits hanging around the hospital so Charles had to talk to the spirits himself.
Charles: Dear departed, please show us your presence. Off the device or show some signs that you are here with us. (Freaky right? FYI I can’t really remember his exact words but he said someting along those lines).
Then, we waited and received no response!

Final Destination: Chua Chu Kang Cemetery
See those small little lights that are arranged in such symmetrical manner? It stretches vastly across the cemetery! Charles said some families will bring their children to this cemetery on special occasions i.e. children’s day and light candles before putting them on these rectangular stones.

Under these ‘tombstones’ contains remains of forgotten souls! So sad right?
Were they unborned children? unclaimed remains exhumed from other cemeteries? No one really knows. There isn’t any clue except for a serial number on the top of the stone.
When I got down from the bus, I saw the beautiful moon and the massive layout of tombs around me. No wonder there were so many of them. Choa Chu Kang Cemetery is Singapore’s largest cemetery and it is now the only cemetery still open for burials.

The candles and the strong smell of incense sent my spine tingling. Brrrr. While Charles was giving a brief history of this cemetery, I felt cold air on my right arm and my hair smell of incense.

Oh Charles was really good at story-telling! He de-myth so many urban legends we hear about Singapore. He mentioned Kampong Buangkok, Matilda House and others. Although the tour coincides with the annual Hungry Ghosts Festival which the Chinese believe the gates of hell open and the souls of the dead roam the earth, no one really saw anything spooky. Perhaps the souls were out patronising the Getais. Hehe.
Nonetheless, I would strongly recommend this trail to anyone who wants to know information about Singapore that is not widely known.
Spooky trail ended around 2pm. Grabbed a cab and I had an awkward conversation with the driver.
I told him my destination promptly upon entering the car and we were silent all the way until we reached my place. then he suddenly asked…
Uncle: Eh where are your friends staying?
Me: HUH my friends? (I was stunned! WHAT FRIENDS? WHO ELSE IS IN THE CAB!) *stared at him blankly*
Uncle: Ya. East or West?
Me: Huh What? Where? What friends? *looks at the empty space beside me*
Uncle: There just now when you waiting for cab, there was few other friends with you right?
Me: …
Okla I guess I’m a little freaked out judging from my reaction towards the cab driver. But I must say that the trail was educational, a bit scary but mostly fun! So what should a freaked out girl have after a spooky night? A lovely cupcake and a packet of cold Milo! Thanks 24Seven for the cute cupcake!

OH the cupcakes(halal) are proudly sponsored by Trisha Ratna.
You can check out her website and photo gallery.

Good night and have a great weekend!
HUH.
did you at least enter the hospital?
dude…. this is boring. fake ghosts doing laundry? wtf?
i thought it was the real thing! like what we see on tv. enter haunted buildings, take pics, motion detectors blablabla. :S
i’d def be freaked out if i was there but i’d def wanna enter the hospital and scare the hell outta myself!
this is rather… disappointing.
Hi Eevon, you got your post on API up so fast!? The cupcake you got was cute – I got one with the Pirate Jolly Rogers Skull :-p
@winn, the hospital is actually a government restricted area so by right, we are not supposed to enter
ZQ
HAHHAA the fake ghosts r just for fun lah. they are posted there to guide us in the forest in case we got lost.
yeah we took lotsa pictures, videos and had motion detectors! just that the spirits did not response leh. told you they went to see getai. if you were there perhaps you will be quite freaked out! eeeeeeee esp in that chua chu kang cemetery. OMG
Hey trail mate! hehe. I was a little spooked out, can’t sleep! so might was well write about my experience when it is still fresh!
mmm I love the cupcake! I’m not a big fan of cupcakes but this is good. Unlike those that I’ve tried, it wasn’t too sweet! Did you enjoyed yours? I was kinda hungry after the adventure. haha.
EE von!! it’s so scary!! eeek!! and you did this during the 7th month!! omg.. you are very brave.. luckily u are still safe and chatting with me on msn.. so the motion sensor in front of the Tau Sar Piah did not sound?? I like Tau Sar Piah too!! my favourite!
YAAAA I wanted to be brave! But the Chua Chu Kang cemetery was the place that really freaked me out. Must be the moon and acres of tombstones around me. What’s more, I felt kinda cold even with humans and incense burning around me! I should be feeling warm right? FREAKY
You like sweet or salty tau sar piah? lol. Eh I can get for you from JB.
i’ll DEFINITELY be freaked out! but it was a 40 people thingy. should be alright! hahaha. i can’t imagine if the detectors actually sense something. Ooooh. I’ll prolly needa hold someone’s hand PLZ.
@ZQ oic… it’s really too bad you guys couldn’t enter!
HAHAH less than 40 because alot of ppl last minute dropped out. Guess they were worried because it’s the 7th month!
Sounds like fun actually seeing all these seldom visited places. Hmm… Actually there are plenty of hidden tombs around Singapore. If you have the time, do look around MacRitchie Reservoir. There are 2 tombs there, one of Lim Bo Seng and one unknown one. Clue: One faces the reservoir with a rather nice view.
Eh Roy you’re so into this sorta stuff! MacRitchie Reservoir? I”ll wait for you to bring me. BTW I think you should go join API!! Hahaha perhaps if I go for another spooky trial, you’ll be the guide!?
Hey Eevon, Ivy here! Whoa you’re very quick with your entries!! I’m still waiting for Charles to reply to email. Haha. Might have caught something interesting.
well we welcome you to join our other tours.
you can find it in http://www.api.sg/
I enjoyed my Jolly Rogers design cupcake – very sweet and yummy!
I also thought about writing the blog post when i reach home but unlike you, I was spooked out by some of the pictures I took and decided to sleep instead.
I ended up blogging about my spooky trail experience on a bright Sunday morning. The pictures still looked spooky :-p
ZQ
Wa damn fast can?! I’m still waiting for photos from API’s side LOL
haha ZQ, Your pics were very spooky! esp those you took with the torch as lighting. genius! You have a good cam!
i cannot sleep that night and my friends wanted to know what happened! so i blogged about it lo.
